We know recycling seems simple but suddenly when faced with the decision with where to place your recycling/trash can seem daunting. DO NOT FRET! Here are some frequently asked questions regarding recycling do’s, don’ts and some simple tips to make recycling simple.

Q: What types of plastic can I recycle?

A: You can recycle clean plastic containers such as, bottles, tubs, jars and jugs.

Q: Can I recycle cans and aluminum?

A: You can recycle all empty tin, aluminum and steel cans.

Q: Can I recycle paper and cardboard?

A: Paper can be recycled if it’s not soiled or wet. As for cardboard boxes, make sure they are flattened before placing them into your recycling bin.

Q: Should I recycle my takeout containers?

A: Takeout containers from restaurants cannot be recycled because they are contaminated with food. Please make sure you place these containers in the trash to prevent contamination of the recycling batch!

Q: Is my Starbucks coffee cup recyclable?

A: Think twice if you see a recycling symbol on your coffee cup. Typically, coffee cups can’t be recycled because they contain a plastic or wax coating that isn’t recyclable.

Q: Is rinsing out my recyclables before putting them in the recycling bin necessary?

A: It’s important that each item you put in recycling bins is free of any contaminants that could interfere with its ability to be recycled. If you’re unsure if an item’s cleanliness level is up to recycling standards, it’s best to rinse it out as a precautionary measure to ensure that it will be recycled.

Q: Where can I drop off my recycling if it’s not available at my apartment complex?

A: If curbside recycling is not available where you live, head to Waste Management’s website to locate the recycling center nearest to you.

Q: Can metal waste be placed in my curbside recycling bin?

A: Metal waste such as, car parts, propane cylinders, lawn mowers and microwaves cannot be placed in curbside recycling bins. These items become a safety hazard and could potentially cause damage to the other recyclable items in your bin. Check special collection locations to recycle metal waste.

Q: What household items can be recycled?

A: Typically, household items like, clothing, textiles, shower curtains, inflatable swimming pools and fences can’t be recycled. Instead, consider donating items that are in good condition so they can be reused by others.

Q: Can I throw plastic bags from the grocery store in my recycling bin?

A: Soft plastics like grocery store bags and ziplocs can’t be recycled because they can’t be used to create another material. Oftentimes, these bags get tangled within the sorting machines used to separate various recycling.

Pro Tip: Effectively recycling requires both awareness and responsibility. If you are unsure about whether or not an item is recyclable, it’s best to trash it. Placing items in recycling bins that aren’t recyclable can compromise the entire bin. Mistakes like that are counterproductive.
